SCHOOL HISTORY
SJK (C) Kwang Hwa is a combination of Shi Tai School and Chung Yi School. In 1936, Shi Tai School was founded by En. Ong Chin Yu while Chung Yi School was established by local residents. Both schools were closed during the occupation of Japan. In 1945, after the Japanese surrendered, local residents tried to combine Shi Tai school and Chung Yi school into Kwang Hwa Primary School. The first Headmaster was Mr. Ong Jian Xia. At that time the number of students was only 127 people in 3 classes.
Due to the rapid increase in the number of students, 2 blocks of board buildings with 16 classrooms and a small hall were built from 1946 to 1963.
At the end of 1961, Professor Ong Jian Xia retired and Mr. Nee Tze Chong was appointed headmaster of the School Board. The school received government subsidies from 1962.
In 1956 and 1967, the School Development Committee purchased 3.72 acres of land. In 1974, a new large hall was built and inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Education En. Chan Siang Sun in 1975.
The first 3-storey concrete block building has 24 classrooms built during the period from 1967 to 1973. The second 3-storey concrete building block has 18 classrooms built in 1986. In 1992 the 3-storey concrete building blocks thirdly built to replace two blocks of building boards built before 1963.
In 1991, Chairman of the Board of Directors En. Phee Joo Teik managed to apply from the state government to acquire a vacant area of 35,000 square meters into a school field.
As the Development Committee was actively developing this school, En. Nee Tze Chong retired on 28th. January 1979 and replaced by En. Lim Wai Long as headmaster.
In 1993, the Development Committee designated a small hall built in 1963 to a multi-storey multi-purpose hall. The ground floor is used to carry out co-curricular activities. The second level is used as an air-conditioning staffroom. Penang Chief Minister Y.A.B. Dr. Koh Tsu Koon was invited to open the building on 25.6.94. Mr. Lim Wai Long retired at 5.7.94 and En. Lim Eng Seng was appointed as the fourth headmaster of the school.
Currently the school has 79 classes and 124 teachers. It is one of the largest schools in our country. The facilities of this school can be considered perfect as a result of tremendous efforts from all parties.

The facilities of this school can be considered perfect as a result of tremendous efforts from all parties. Founder of the school SJK (C) Kwang Hwa comes from a combination of two primary schools called 'Shi Tai' and 'Chung Yi'. After the war it was set up by Khoo Keat Sian, Ooi Ah Pee, Lee Kim Fong and several other founders. Among them En. Ooi Ah Pee has held important positions for more than 10 years. He was elected as the school deputy chairman till the end of his twilight years. Mr. Ooi Ah Pee was born in 1915. He lives in a fishing village in Bagan Jermal, Butterworth. He was a generous and conscientious man. Although he is not well educated, he has been working hard in the development of Kwang Hwa school. After the Japanese surrender in 1946, the school building was still an attap-roof structure. The school often faces financial difficulties in its operation. At the end of 1947, En. Ooi as chairman, solicits 50 cents of each fishermen's catch to solve school financial problems. In 1952, the school received half the subsidy from the government. Mr. Ooi Ah Pee as well as other school development committee members continue its resolve to construct the school new building. He deeply emphasizes the education of the younger generation. In 1985, Mr. Ooi died at age 70. He has contributed much to Kwang Hwa's school all his life.
